The organisers of the ‘March for Free Expression’ to take place tomorrow in Trafalgar Square have reversed their decision to encourage demonstrators to carry placards and wear t-shirts bearing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The organisers initially welcomed such placards but have now admitted their mistake and issued an appeal to people not to display the cartoons (to see the full statement, please visit http://marchforfreeexpression.blogspot.com/). The turnaround has lead to numerous individuals withdrawing their support for the march and demanding refunds for their donations clearly indicating that there was huge support for the demonstration based on it being anti-Muslim.
IHRC congratulates the campaigners who sent protest letters to Ian Blair and Ken Livingstone pressuring them to take action. It shows the victory which Allah (swt) can bestow upon us if we mix our words with action.
Despite the U-turn, IHRC still believes that some demonstrators will bring offensive and provocative placards tomorrow. The BNP yesterday again pledged their support for the demo calling on people to attend. IHRC urges campaigners to ask the police to arrest any demonstrators who bring offensive and provocative placards, especially as the organisers themselves now have said they are not welcome.
